What is Oral Thrush and Who Is Most Vulnerable to It?

After our granddaughter suffered from oral thrush we decided to do some research on our own about the causes and extent of oral thrush. We learned a few things and we'll keep on posting them on this site. Our greatest satisfaction came when we found a solution.

Oral thrush is caused by an out of control growth of the yeast fungus candida albicans. Normally it doesn’t cause any problems but an imbalance in the body allows it to create havoc. We have healthy bacteria in our bodies that keep the candida in check but when that balance is disturbed oral thrush can be the result.

Our daughter developed yeast infections late in her teens and in the early years of her marriage. It was painful and very frustrating for her and her husband. She didn’t appear to have a compromised immune system, nor did she have any of the other common risk factors which made it all the more difficult to understand and treat.

What causes the imbalance of candida?

Several things can allow for the growth of candida. A chemistry change brought on by the use of antibiotics which kill good and bad bacteria, chemotherapy, malnutrition, drug abuse and a weakened immune system can account for oral thrush and other yeast infections.

The result can lead to diaper rash in infants, vaginal yeast infections and oral thrush.

Who gets oral thrush?

Any one can get oral thrush but infants, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are most vulnerable but the most vulnerable are:

Newborn Babies. They contract it from the fungus in the mother’s birth canal. It usually shows up when the baby is 2 to 10 weeks old.
Nursing Mothers. Nipple damage due to breastfeeding can lead to an elevated risk of Candida infection. Although the nipples and areola may not show signs of an infection certain symptoms can help indicate that one is occurring. One or both nipples may be experience stinging pain or itching. Visible signs that a mother has a Candida infection include nipples with white dots, a skin rash with small fluid filled blisters, swelling and cracking of the skin. If thrush is present both baby and mother should be treated.
Ill fitting dentures cause minor abrasions in the gums which permit the candida to grow and infect the mouth.
Adults suffering from diabetes or other metabolic disturbance.
People undergoing chemotherapy or antibiotic treatments
People with inadequate nutrition.

People with a compromised immune system.
Patients after a tonsillectomy.
Women undergoing hormonal changes, like pregnancy or those on birth control pills
People who perform cunnilingus or fellatio on a sexual partner who has thrush.
People who take inhaled steroids for treatment of lung conditions like asthma
People who drink large amounts of milk.
Women during infertility treatment.
Children are included in all groups of people above.

Any treatments for oral thrush?

Our daughter tried a variety of prescription and over the counter medications with limited success. Her relief came when she was introduced to the Mangosteen juice by Xango. The Thrush is Finally Gone

We were reintroduced to baby's thrush by our granddaughter Kaitlynn. (Her mother had it when she was a baby as well). She came kicking and screaming on April 21, 2006 and life has never been the same. We think she's the most beautiful thing on this side of heaven!

Shortly after her grand appearance she started developing white spots in her mouth. Furthermore, her mother, our lovely daughter Christal, complained of pain in her breasts during nursing. Her doctor confirmed they both had thrush.

She did what every good mom would do but the thrush would not leave. Over the counter drugs, home remedies and prescriptions proved ineffective. Here's how Christal put it:

When my daughter was born (April 21/06)I had decided that I wanted to nurse her for as long as I could. I started nursing and all went as I had hoped that it would, it was a beautiful experience. About 2 weeks after she was born we both developed thrush. It was so painful, it felt as though razor blades were in my breasts whenever she would nurse. My midwife told me to use Gentian Violet to see if that would help get rid of the thrush. As long as I was using the Gentian Violet it worked but as soon as I would stop using it the thrush would be back. I considered weaning Kaitlynn at that point because it was so painful; but then we decided to up my dose of Mangosteen juice as well as put Kaitlynn on a diluted dose of the Mangosteen juice. Within 48 hours both of us were thrush free. We have continued to give the Mangosteen juice to Kaitlynn and neither of us has had thrush since those first few weeks. Kaitlynn is now 6 ½ months old, I am still nursing her and loving it.
